About the work

I wonder why people paint.Although I am sure there are many reasons, I paint as if I were drinking water.I paint as if I were passing waste through my body.And no matter how hard I examine the painting, I can never really understand myself. Nevertheless, everything is a reflection of myself and so I will paint more and more.

人はなぜ絵を描くのだろう。色々な理由があるだろうが、僕は水を飲むように絵を描く。排泄をするように絵を描く。それをあとからまじまじとみても、自分自身のことはよくわからない。しかし、全ては僕自身を写している。ますます絵を描いてゆくだろう。

About the artist

ATARU SATO (b. 1986, Chiba Prefecture, Japan) is currently based in Tokyo. In 2009, he graduated from the Advanced Art Course in the Department of Information Design, Faculty of Arts and Design at Kyoto University of Arts and Design. The artistʼs major group exhibitions include “10000 Lives: The 8th Gwangju Biennale” (2010), “Yokohama Triennale 2011: OUR MAGIC HOUR ‒ How Much of the World Can We Know?” (2011), “Inside” (Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2014), and “Dojima River Biennale 2019” (Osaka, 2019). Satoʼs works have been acquired by the Takahashi Collection as well as by Louis Vuitton Malletier.
